October 3, 2022: State Tech Staying in Touch

Staying in Touch – Monday, October 3, 2022

Welcome Back!

We hope you had a great weekend. We are moving forward toward the end of the first 8 weeks of classes. Make sure you get to class this week. It is important to turn in all assignments and work with your instructors to make sure you have everything complete for grading.

Handle Hard Better

I saw a video over the weekend I wanted to share with all of you (Click HERE for video). Our team has been working with many students the first 6 weeks of classes. A common theme is that the classes are “hard”. We do not want anyone to be discouraged if you are feeling that college is hard. It is supposed to be hard. We are preparing you for the world of work after earning your State Tech degree. We want you to be the kind of person who handles hard better. Any meaningful pursuit is going to be hard. Our instructors and our staff are working with you to be able to handle hard and then whatever comes at you in life; you are going to be great. If you can take the content of the video and apply it to your technical program, I think it can provide some great motivation to continue to work hard and handle tough situations better.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need assistance with anything. As we spoke about at PowerUp, here are some folks you can reach out to who can help when things start to feel out of your control.

We have received several questions from students and parents about the days the college is closed the remainder of the academic year.

Each instructor lists his or her open office hours and the location of the office in the syllabus so you are able to find them quickly. Please see the sample below. Life hack: do not just show up to an office. You should reach out to the instructor and ask to meet when it fits into both of your schedules. Their contact information should be in the syllabus as well as on the State Tech website.

Student Account & Financial Aid

We want to make sure all students and parents have a good understanding of what financial aid resources they have to assist in paying their student account for the Fall semester. The best way to do this is to view the student account charges in myTech. Then, please login to the State Tech Financial Aid Portal. Once you are logged in, the home screen will look like this:

Click on Financial Aid Offer in the Menu section. This will be the list of financial aid we are able to offer based on the results of your FAFSA. If you compare the amount of aid available for the fall against the charges on the student account, you should be able to determine if you owe a balance after financial aid is applied to the student account or if you will receive a balance check. Here is an example of what it will look like:

If you have questions about this process, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Financial Aid Office in one of several different ways. Everyone has questions, so please do not hesitate to ask and we will provide additional information for you to help you through the process.

  1. Stop by the office in the Information Technology Center. Summer Hours:

Monday – Wednesday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Thursday 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM

Friday 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM

  2. Send your questions to financialaid@statetechmo.edu
  3. Ask us a question on the Web Chat at www.statetechmo.edu

Fall Welcome Letter

Welcome to State Technical College of Missouri!

We believe that your choice to attend State Tech was an excellent decision!  Whether you are entering your first semester with State Tech or preparing to complete your degree program, we have some advice that will serve you well as the Fall semester begins.

Some exciting news took place last week and we wanted to start the semester off by sharing it with you. State Tech was ranked by WalletHub as the #1 2-year college in the United States for the 4th consecutive year! Congratulations! You are a student at the highest ranked 2-year college in the country!

Don’t forget to start the day with a FREE coffee in the ITC Rotunda from 7:45 – 10:00 AM! Have a great first day of classes, then end the day with Paintball from 4:00 – 8:00 PM. Stop by and play once after class or stay and play multiple times. Remember you can earn points for your programs towards a $5,000 prize and earn tokens for yourself.

We are excited to partner with you in your educational goals.  Whether you are hoping to earn a degree in a career or technical field or working on completing the first two years of your Bachelor’s degree, our faculty and staff are committed to your success.  We hope that you take the time to read some of the following suggestions to make this Fall term a successful start to the 2022-2023 instructional year.

  • Attend class – as you heard from Dr. Strong as PowerUp yesterday, being present is a high percentage of being successful. Make sure you are attending all classes and turning in all assignments.
  • Get to know your instructors – take the time to let them know who you are before or after class, they are the best source of knowledge for the class and it’s a great idea to begin networking with them.  They know many people within their field of expertise, in industry in Missouri and beyond.
  • Get to know your fellow students – take the time to meet new people before or after class – be social!  You may find a study partner and new friends. Having lunch in the Founder’s 1961 Café or going to an event hosted by Student Activities are great ways to meet people outside the classroom.
  • Ask questions – seek out services when you need the assistance – we have a fantastic group of staff and services that can provide you with answers to your most difficult questions. State Tech staff want to help, so do not hesitate to approach us and ask a question.
  • Get involved! – State Technical College of Missouri has many different activities to keep students busy when they are outside the classroom.  We have clubs, organizations, small events like movie nights, game nights, open mic nights to dances, concerts, and Paintball, GloZone dance parties, and NASCAR Simulator.  Make sure to follow State Tech on social media channels! Also, read the Shout Out each week for updates to the activities calendar. They do a great job of keeping our students busy with activities all week long.
  • Know important dates, deadlines and policies – it is the responsibility of students at State Technical College of Missouri to make themselves familiar with important dates, deadlines and policies.  All of these dates can be found in the Student Handbook.
  • The college will be closed the following dates:
    • Monday, September 5, 2022
    • Tuesday, September 6, 2022
    • Friday, October 14, 2022
    • Wednesday, November 23, 2022
    • Thursday, November 24, 2022
    • Friday, November 25, 2022
    • Friday, December 16, 2022 – Monday, January 2, 2023

Your experience at State Technical College of Missouri is important to us and we are here to make your time here productive and successful.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to us by phone, e-mail or connect with us on Twitter @statetechmovpsa & Instagram @statetechvpsa

  • Why else should you attend events during WOW?
  • How about earning $5,000 for your program?

  • State Tech tokens are tokens to use at the end of year Silent Auction to buy prizes such as tv’s, electronics, video games systems (PS5), State Tech Gear and much more.

3:30 PM you will meet instructors in your program and talk about important information to help students be successful. After that meeting we will all get back together at 4:30 PM for a FREE BBQ Dinner with a Concert on the patio between the Activity Center and the Osage County Community Center (OCCC). It’s right next to the American Flag mural. This is a great time to get to know students in your program and students from all other programs across campus.

RETURNING STUDENTS – INFORMATION FOR POWER BACK UP

If you are a returning student, we hope you had a great summer and we are excited to have you back on campus.

We want you to come to the FREE BBQ and concert on Monday night from 4:30 – 7:00 PM.

The rest of the day is optional for you to take care of any last minute business in the Bookstore, Cashier’s window, Financial Aid, or Registration offices.

We hope to see you to earn some tokens on Monday night!

Week of Welcome Signage

During the Week of Welcome, you will see signage about campus events and the “bright signs” with scrolling information. These are two great ways to stay up to date with campus events during the week.

Week of Welcome – August 22nd through August 26th

Week of Welcome offers activities for all students throughout the first week on campus.

We believe students that make connections to State Tech outside the classroom are more likely to persist and retain to graduation. Along the way, we hope they have a lot of fun and network with students from many programs that can become friends after graduation.

Please look at the list of events in the graphic. We hope they stop by Tuesday morning and grab FREE coffee and donuts before heading to class. Then, stay and play paintball from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM.

Wednesday, try to have the fastest lap in the NASCAR simulator from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM, speak to local employers at the Part-Time Job Fair, or get to know other students at the Ice Cream Social at 4:00 PM.

Thursday, make your own State Tech tie-dyed t-shirt from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM and join us for Trivia Night in the Vehicle & Power Center. Get a team of 6 together and see if you can take home the top prizes!

Friday, we will have Carnival Food Frenzy before you conclude classes for the first week!

Are there reasons to attend these events than just fun? Absolutely! First, you can accumulate “State Tech Tokens” to purchase prizes at the end of the year BBQ. Second, you can help your program win a $5,000 prize just be attending these events.

Week of Welcome Competition – Win $5,000 for Your Program

We think it’s always a great time to attend fun and free activities outside the classroom.

But if you need another reason to attend Week of Welcome activities, we have one for you.

The program that has the highest attendance percentage during Week of Welcome Activities will win a $5,000 award from Student Government Association.

Will Auto Collision win again? Will another program steal the title away and win the $5,000?

Attend all the events for your program and see if you can help win the prize and earn yourself State Tech Tokens.

State Tech Tokens

When a student attends any event on campus, they check-in and earn tokens. We keep a running scoreboard all year long and students use them to bid on and purchase prizes at the end of the year BBQ.

Last year, Mason Zollman accumulated the most tokens and won a PS5, Oculus VR Goggles, and more. It pays off to attend events, earn tokens, and get prizes at the end of the school year.

We hope to see many of you attend all the events you are able throughout the year. You will event earn tokens by participating in and/or attending Intramural events as a spectator.

Later, when we offer education and awareness programming, those will have a token value as well. We are looking forward to a great year and hope to see you at as many events as your schedule allows.

Next Five Wednesdays

After Week of Welcome, the fun will not go away. We plan to host an event each of the next five Wednesdays through the end of September.

The first event of the “Next Five Wednesdays” schedule will be the “Over Kill BBQ”.

Wednesday, August 31, 2022 from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM (or we run out of beef). We will host a FREE BBQ on the Osage Community Center Patio.

State Tech purchased a steer at the Osage County Fair and we will be cooking the whole cow on the 9-foot grill for you! All are welcome to attend!

What Questions Do You Have?

Every week, I am going to close by asking you to reply if you have questions. I will reply to all questions. If you ask a question that everyone needs to hear, I may use your question in our next Staying in Touch. All of this information and more is on the New Student FAQ website.

Thanks again for choosing State Tech and we look forward to you joining us next semester! Just 5 days until classes begin!

Power Up is Monday, August 22, 2022

Our campus services will be open at 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM to assist students and parents that need to complete business with any office prior to Power Up.

Check-In for Power Up begins at 2:00 PM in the Activity Center.

3:00 PM Power Up Welcome session begins! We will welcome everyone to campus and then get you to your instructors.

Need Part-Time Employment?

If you are interested in finding part-time employment while attending State Tech, Scott Peters in Career Services has compiled a list of local and on-campus options for work. We have attached a list to this email with the employers in the town of Linn and surrounding areas that hire State Tech students on a regular basis.  The list includes retail, farming and manufacturing.

If you are interested in a job on campus, you will want to visit our main website.

https://www.statetechmo.edu/career-openings/

If the college has openings, you will find Service Desk Attendant-Golf Course and Guest Services Attendants under the heading Staff Positions.   These jobs are available at the Activity Center or the Golf Course.

Additionally, State Tech’s dining service provider also hires students.  The dining service provider is Aladdin.  If interested in working for Aladdin while attending State Tech, visit the Aladdin website: https://apply.jobappnetwork.com/eliorstudentjobs/en or contact John Ruppert at john.ruppert@aladdinfood.com

The college also has a work-study program.  Jobs include janitorial and clerical positions throughout campus.  Students are allowed to work 10 hours a week.  These jobs are an excellent way to earn some dollars while not leaving campus. To determine your eligibility, you’ll want to contact representatives in the Financial Aid Office at FinancialAid@statetechmo.edu

If you have any questions, you can contact Scott to learn more:

June 28, 2022: State Tech Staying in Touch

Dear Students and Families,

We are just 8 short weeks away from PowerUp on Monday, August 22, 2022.  Please be on the lookout for information specific to the agenda in the coming weeks.

Students will meet with their instructors and learn about classroom and lab expectations. All campus offices will be open to do any last minute business.

We will also have a FREE BBQ dinner and a concert to wrap up the day. We are excited to welcome everyone to campus for Fall 2022. Returning students, you are welcome to attend the BBQ and concert as a part of your Power Back Up day!

Power UP & Week of Welcome

Be on the lookout for more information about Power UP and Week of Welcome (WOW) in the next couple weeks. Power UP will take place on Monday, August 22, 2022. Check-in will be from 2:00 – 3:00 PM! We will have important information from faculty and staff. We will then have a BBQ, and a welcome concert! Week of Welcome (W.O.W.) will take place Monday, August 22, 2022 through Friday, August 26, 2022. Power UP and W.O.W. are activities designed to introduce you to the services and resources available at State Tech. Power Up is required for all first year students. Please be on the lookout for more information.

Second year students; be on the lookout for additional information about Power Back UP on Monday, August 22, 2022. You will have the options to take care of any last minute tasks with Records, Financial Aid, Cashier and the Bookstore. Don’t forget to stay for supper at the BBQ, enjoy a concert, and join in on the Week of Welcome activities scheduled for the week.

Do Parents Attend Power Up?

One of the most common questions we have about Power Up is, “do parents/families attend or is it just for students?”

That is a great question. I think that is really up to your family. PowerUp will have a general welcome session that anyone can attend. The next session for students is with the other students in their program and all of their instructors (students only).

We do welcome anyone to attend our BBQ and concert as a wrap-up to the day. So parents are more than welcome to stay and attend the welcome session and BBQ, but it is up to you.

Our offices are open at 8:00 AM that day in the event you have last minute things you would like to wrap up before PowerUp begins. That is when we see many parents getting last minute items done in the Bookstore, Financial Aid, etc. if they were not able to complete them on Move-In Day.

Meal Plan Information – Coming Soon!

State Tech is finalizing details of their contract with a new food service provider. Once complete, we will release information about the options, costs, and how to order. If you are living on campus, your required meal plan cost will be added to your student account with your housing charge. If you live off campus or are commuting from home, you will be able to order a commuter meal plan that will fit your needs. Please be on the lookout for details to be released soon.

Do you have questions?

I am always hoping to hear from students and parents about questions they have. I will take the time to reply with an answer and I may share the question with the entire group. Hope to hear some great questions soon. Have a great week!

June 14, 2022: State Tech Staying in Touch - Fall Students

We hope everyone is having a great week! We are now just 10 short weeks away from our first day of classes for the 2022-2023 instructional year. Do students have access to Microsoft Office Suite?

Yes! State Tech students receive a free Office 365 account that includes online Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Teams along with some additional tools.

Once the student has attended RevUp, they receive their credentials. Students should be able to access everything at www.office.com. They should enter their State Tech e-mail address and password. Their password is the same as Canvas and myTech.

If you encounter any issues, please reach out to the HelpDesk at helpdesk@statetechmo.edu.

What if I have transfer credit?

If you have college transfer credit for State Tech to evaluate, please submit official transcripts from the college where you completed the courses to admissions@statetechmo.edu. The time process transfer credit can take up to two weeks from the date our office receives it.

What steps do I take to confirm my A+ eligibility?

If you meet the A+ eligibility requirements, you must have a final High School Transcript with the A+ designation sent to the State Tech Admissions Office at admissions@statetechmo.edu.  If you have attended a college after High School graduation, a final college transcript is also required. Students must complete a FAFSA to receive A+. The A+ Scholarship pays for standard tuition and fees that are required for your degree. It does not cover fees that are program or course specific, books, tools, supplies, or living expenses. Please visit our A+ Scholarship page for further information.

Can students use FAFSA proceeds for books or tools?

This is a great question. It can…but we need to determine your eligibility to see if this is possible for your student.

When you complete a FAFSA, we will process and create an award offer. If the aid accepted will cover expenses beyond tuition/fees, those additional funds can be used in the Bookstore. For specific information about your award offer, please follow the instructions below.

Financial Aid Missing Documents

If you have submitted your FAFSA to State Tech and we are looking for additional documentation to finalize your Financial Aid Offer, please check your student e-mail and follow the directions.

The e-mail will have the following information:

Please login to the State Tech Financial Aid Portal and review the “Missing Items & Messages” page to view and submit any items that have not been received.

Your financial aid eligibility will not be determined and finalized until all required documents are submitted and reviewed.

Once you are logged in, the home screen will look like this:

Click on the Menu link in the blue border and review the “Missing Items and Messages” page to see what needs to be turned in and what our office has received.

Once all documentation has been turned in and processed, you will be able to log in and see your “Financial Aid Offer”. Click on Financial Aid Offer in the Menu section. This will be the list of financial aid we are able to offer based on the results of your FAFSA. Here is an example of what it will look like:

Early Alert Reports – Importance of Attendance

All faculty have the ability to share concerns about students through our Early Alert process. They keep us informed of things they see may keep students from success each semester. We have received many reports about students missing classes in the first three weeks. Attendance is crucial to your success in the classroom. If you have an illness or an emergency that prevents you from attending, please contact your instructors. When an Early Alert is submitted, our Counseling Staff will reach out to you via text, e-mail, and/or phone. We want to make sure everything is going ok and offer any solutions to issues you may be having outside the classroom. We want to make sure you are aware we can help. Attendance is essential to success, but if you have to miss class, please notify your instructors.

The Early Alert Reporting Form is used by faculty to notify the Counseling Services team about concerns they have about student success.

Parent Communications

Would you like your parents to receive Staying in Touch communications? If you think they would enjoy staying up to date on campus events and important dates, please share this link with them and we can add them to our new parent communications list.

Summer Student Account Q&A

You Summer charges are now visible on myTech. Here are some common Q&A about your student account.

How do I view the charges in my student account, or my student account balance?

Your student account information can be viewed by logging into your myTech account under the Student tab and myFinancial Information.

 When is tuition due?

Student account balances are due in full by the first day of the semester. The balance will incur a 2% finance charge each month it remains unpaid. Students can avoid the monthly finance charge by setting up a payment plan and making their monthly payments on time.

Are payment plans available to pay my student account balance?

If you are unable to pay your student account balance in full by the first day of the semester, State Tech offers a 3-month and 4-month payment plan option. Contact the Cashier’s Office at 573-897-5121 for more information.

Summer Welcome Letter – June 6, 2022

Welcome to State Technical College of Missouri!

We believe that your choice to attend State Tech was an excellent decision!  Whether you are entering your first semester with State Tech or preparing to complete your degree program, we have some advice that will serve you well as the Summer term begins.

State Tech was ranked by WalletHub as the #1 2-year college in the United States for the 3rd consecutive year during the 2021-2022 academic year! Congratulations! You are a student at the highest ranked 2-year college in the country!

Strong in previous speeches, being present is a high percentage of being successful at State Tech. Make sure you are attending all classes and turning in all assignments.
  • Turn in all assignments – it is not just enough to show up on a daily basis. You need to follow instructions and turn in all assigned work. If you are struggling, let your instructors know. They are here to help.
Having lunch in the Mainstream Cafeteria or going to an event hosted by Student Activities are great ways to meet people outside the classroom.
We have clubs, organizations, small events like movie nights, game nights, open mic nights to dances, concerts, and Paintball, GloZone dance parties, and Live Band Karaoke.  Make sure to follow State Tech on social media channels! Also, read the Shout Out each week for updates to the activities calendar. They do a great job of keeping our students busy with activities all week long. We have FREE tickets to the Jefferson City Renegades baseball game next Wednesday, June 15th.  Pick up tickets at the Activity Center and have a great time.

Activity Center – New Cardio Equipment

We are happy to announce the State Tech Activity Center has received new cardio equipment. Earlier this year, the Student Government Association voted to use their “SGA Project Fund” to purchase new cardio equipment for the Activity Center. We are expecting more weight equipment to arrive in mid-to-late June. The cardio equipment has touch screens that allow students to stream from Netflix or enjoy a visually adaptive workout on trails around the world.

The Activity Center is open this summer the following hours:

Monday – Friday         5:00 AM – 10:00 PM

Saturday                     7:00 AM – 10:00 PM

June 3, 2022: State Tech Staying in Touch

Good afternoon students and parents. This Friday, we are preparing for students to arrive on campus for Summer classes that begin on Monday, June 6, 2022. Our offices will be open Monday – Wednesday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Thursday 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM, and Friday 8:00 AM – Noon. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reply and we will work to get them answered.

Summer Housing

If you are looking for Summer Housing (June 6th through August 18th), we do have rooms available on campus. Please contact Hanna at (573) 897-5165 or housing@statetechmo.edu if you are in need of housing for Summer. Cost is $1,490 for the Summer.

Off Campus Housing – Fall

If you are still looking for off campus housing for the Fall, we have added two new sections to the Off Campus Housing portion of the website.

“Other Housing Options” – the Stone Hearth Inn has rooms in Linn, MO as a short-term option for housing in the Fall. Holts Summit Fire Protection is offering housing for students who are willing to provide 30 hours a month as a volunteer firefighter.

“Jefferson City Rentals” is a list of potential rental options for who do not mind a 20-25 minute commute from Jefferson City.

Property available for Sale – here is a link to a property near to campus available for sale. We do have families who have purchased property for their student and a few roommates in the past.

As always, if you have questions, please reach out to Hanna at (573) 897-5165 or housing@statetechmo.edu.

Student Insurance

We received several questions about health insurance and renters insurance from students and parents this week. These are great questions. Here are some talking points and resources on both topics.

State Tech does not sell health or personal property insurance for students. The college recommends that all students seek health and accident insurance if they are not adequately covered by a family or work insurance plan.  While the college does not endorse one insurance plan over another, the college recommends using www.healthcare.gov to search for a plan. Students in the past have shared finding affordable insurance by searching this site.

If the student is living in an apartment or on campus in a cottage, we also recommend personal property insurance. State Tech believes it is wise to students to protect their personal property while enrolled. NSSI is one option students can explore for that protection. All students are responsible for their own personal property.

Students are allowed to remain on a parent plan as long as the plan covers dependents. Recent changes to the law allow students to remain on a parent plan until they are 26 years of age.

Renegades Tickets

Wednesday, June 15th will be State Tech Night at the Jefferson City Renegades baseball game. We have FREE tickets for students. Just stop by the Activity Center starting on June 1st and pick one up. Severe Weather – Alerts

Another great question from a parent this week about severe weather and a tornado shelter on campus.

In the event of tornado warnings in Linn, students will be notified through our Rave Alert system. They will receive a text and an e-mail (to their State Tech e-mail) of a reported Tornado Warning.

In addition, Osage County has Osage County Public Safety Alerts. The alerts are powered by Smart911. Students can register to receive Smart911 alerts to inform them on weather, traffic, and other emergencies in the community.

Tornado Shelter – Activity Center

The Activity Center has a tornado shelter and is open from 5:00 AM – Midnight Monday through Friday and 7:00 AM – Midnight during the academic year. So we will always have staff in the building during those times if we have a severe weather warning.

From midnight to 5:00 AM, we have a Residence Life Coordinator that lives on campus who is notified in the event of a tornado warning. They go up to the Activity Center and open the shelter.

Off campus students are encouraged to utilize the shelter if it is safe for them to attempt to get to campus. This is a great topic that we normally share just with students when classes begin in the Fall, but I think we can talk about in an upcoming Staying in Touch for everyone to know. Thanks for the question.

Good afternoon students and families!

We hope everyone is having a great start to the week. In today’s edition of Staying in Touch, we have information about students granting access to their parents through the FERPA process. In addition, we have some information about Move-In Day on campus, PowerUp, and Week of Welcome. We will have detailed information later this summer on those events, but wanted to share some basic information so you are able to prepare. Finally, we have a couple questions we received from students and parents last week that I wanted to share information with everyone. Have a great week.

FERPA Access in myTech

Did you know once you enter State Tech, the right to access your education and financial records at State Tech belong to you.  You can now consent to provide access to your student and financial record to whomever you would like when you complete the consent form.  Below are the step-by-step instructions to complete the consent form for your FERPA permission.  After completing your form, please allow up to 48 hours before the rights are granted and they receive the login to myTech.

After logging into myTech – Select “Student”

Select “myForms” from the pages on the left side of your screen:

myFERPA Permissions portal is located in the center of the screen. Select “Define New Permissions”.

Complete the form by entering in the information of the individual that you would like to provide FERPA access to your account

Student & Parent Questions From Last Week

We had some great questions from students and parents last week. I wanted to share the Q&A with all of you, because they are definitely meaningful.

When will Summer Financial Aid appear on the student account?

Summer financial aid will be applied to your student account on June 16th. You should be able to see that in myTech on that date. We will share summer “important dates” document with everyone in the coming week.

Do parents have to attend PowerUp?

This is great question. PowerUp is mandatory for students. During the event, they will get the chance to meet their instructors and learn about classroom and lab expectations. There is also a FREE BBQ and a concert to end the day. Parents may attend the Welcome Session and the BBQ and concert. The students will attend the “Meet the Instructors” portion of the agenda on their own as they get to know their classmates and faculty for the first time.

Tips & Tricks

Tips & Tricks - Annual Inclement Weather Notification

Tips & Tricks – Annual Inclement Weather Notification

Inclement Weather Dismissal In preparation for colder weather, attached are the Inclement Weather Dismissal and Campus Operations procedures. State Technical College of Missouri will assess weather reports and make decisions on classes or possible closings as soon as possible. All community members should remember that in all situations you should never put yourself in harm’s way by driving or going out into the weather if you believe the risks are too high! If administrators decide to close or cancel classes, we will send a State Tech RAVE Alert, as well as public notification through available local media resources (TV and Social Media). See attached inclement weather dismissal procedure. If the event of severe winter weather, the campus will execute one of three operational plans depending on the nature and severity of the weather system we receive. State Tech will either: (1) close operations, (2) move to remote operations, or (3) delay the start of classes/early release. The plan for any instance will be announced through the State Tech RAVE Alert system via email and text, State Tech website, State Tech social media, etc. For all severe weather Be aware of weather conditions at all times, especially if severe weather is predicted.

· Sign up for alerts through Smart 911 by going to www.smart911.com

· Check MODOT road map by going to http://traveler.modot.org/map/index.html

· Sign up for an email or text alert from local television stations

· Download a weather app for smart phones or mobile devices (many are free)

· If you receive a severe weather message, spread the word to your co-workers and family members, especially those who work outside Dangers of Ice Frozen ponds may look beautiful and enticing but the ice may not be as sturdy as it appears to be. You can never be sure of its thickness and how much weight it can support. Ice on frozen ponds, lakes and waterways can pose a threat to the safety of anyone who walks out on them and the safety of emergency services who try to rescue them. We would also urge you not to skate or walk on iced over surfaces which could be more dangerous than they first look. Venturing onto frozen ponds, lakes and rivers is extremely dangerous. Please don’t put yourself or others at risk and stay off the ice!

Before a Winter Storm To prepare for a winter storm you should do the following:

· Before a winter storm approaches, add the following supplies to your emergency kit: Rock salt or more environmentally safe products to melt ice on walkways.

Visit the Environmental Protection Agency https://www.epa.gov/mo for a complete list of recommended products. Sand to improve traction. Snow shovels and other snow removal equipment. Sufficient heating fuel. You may become isolated in your home and regular fuel sources may be cut off. Store a good supply of dry, seasoned wood for your fireplace or wood- burning stove. Adequate clothing and blankets to keep you warm.

· Make a Family Communications Plan. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to know how you will contact one another, how you will get back together and what you will do in case of an emergency.

· A NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts alerts and warnings directly from the NWS for all hazards. You may also sign up in advance to receive notifications from your local emergency services.

· Download FEMA’s Be Smart. Know Your Alerts and Warnings for a summary of notifications at: www.ready.gov/prepare. <http://www.ready.gov/prepare> Free smart phone apps, such as those available from FEMA and the American Red Cross, provide information about finding shelters, providing first aid, and seeking assistance for recovery.

· Minimize travel. If travel is necessary, keep a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle.

· Bring pets/companion animals inside during winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas with non-frozen drinking water.

Winterize Your Vehicle – Check or have a mechanic check the following items on your car: · Antifreeze levels – ensure they are sufficient to avoid freezing. · Battery and ignition system – should be in top condition and battery terminals should be clean. · Brakes – check for wear and fluid levels. · Exhaust system – check for leaks and crimped pipes and repair or replace as necessary. Carbon monoxide is deadly and usually gives no warning. · Fuel and air filters – replace and keep water out of the system by using additives and maintaining a full tank of gas. A full tank will keep the fuel line from freezing. · Heater and defroster – ensure they work properly. · Lights and flashing hazard lights – check for serviceability. · Oil – check for level and weight. Heavier oils congeal more at low temperatures and do not lubricate as well. · Thermostat – ensure it works properly. · Windshield wiper equipment – repair any problems and maintain proper washer fluid level. · Install good winter tires – Make sure the tires have adequate tread. All-weather radials are usually adequate for most winter conditions. However, some jurisdictions require that to drive on their roads, vehicles must be equipped with chains or snow tires with studs.

Know the Terms Know the terms used to describe changing winter weather conditions and what actions to take. These terms can be used to determine the timeline and severity of an approaching storm. (Advisory / Watch / Warning). The NWS also issues advisories and warnings for other winter weather, including blizzards, freezes, wind chill, lake effect snow, and dense fog. Be alert to weather reports and tune in for specific guidance when these conditions develop. · Freezing Rain – Rain that freezes when it hits the ground, creating a coating of ice on roads, walkways, trees and power lines. · Sleet – Rain that turns to ice pellets before reaching the ground. Sleet also causes moisture on roads to freeze and become slippery. · Wind Chill- Wind chill is the temperature it “feels like” when you are outside. The NWS provides a Wind chill Chart to show the difference between air temperature and the perceived temperature and the amount of time until frostbite occurs. For more information, visit: https://www.weather.gov/ama/WindChill · Winter Weather Advisory – Winter weather conditions are expected to cause significant inconveniences and may be hazardous. When caution is used, these situations should not be life threatening. The NWS issues a winter weather advisory when conditions are expected to cause significant inconveniences that may be hazardous. If caution is used, these situations should not be life-threatening. · Winter Storm Watch – A winter storm is possible in your area. Tune in to NOAA Weather Radio, commercial radio, or television for more information. The NWS issues a winter storm watch when severe winter conditions, such as heavy snow and/or ice, may affect your area but the location and timing are still uncertain. A winter storm watch is issued 12 to 36 hours in advance of a potential severe storm. Tune in to NOAA Weather Radio, local radio, TV, or other news sources for more information. Monitor alerts, check your emergency supplies, and gather any items you may need if you lose power. · Winter Storm Warning – A winter storm is occurring or will soon occur in your area. · Blizzard Warning – Sustained winds or frequent gusts to 35 miles per hour or greater and considerable amounts of falling or blowing snow (reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile) are expected to prevail for a period of three hours or longer. · Frost/Freeze Warning – Below freezing temperatures are expected. During Winter Storms and Extreme Cold · Stay indoors during the storm. · Walk carefully on snowy, icy, walkways. · Avoid overexertion when shoveling snow. Overexertion can bring on a heart attack-a major cause of death in the winter. Use caution, take breaks, push the snow instead of lifting it when possible, and lift lighter loads. · Keep dry. Change wet clothing frequently to prevent a loss of body heat. Wet clothing loses all of its insulating value and transmits heat rapidly. · Signs of Frostbite: Occurs when the skin and body tissue just beneath it freezes. Loss of feeling and white or pale appearance in extremities, such as fingers, toes, earlobes, face, and the tip of the nose. · What to Do: Cover exposed skin, but do not rub the affected area in an attempt to warm it up. Seek medical help immediately. · Signs of Hypothermia: Dangerously low body temperature. Uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness, and apparent exhaustion. · What to Do: If symptoms of hypothermia are detected take the person’s temperature. If it is below 95°, seek medical attention immediately. Get the victim to a warm location. Remove wet clothing. Warm the center of the body first by wrapping the person in blankets or putting on dry clothing. Give warm, non-alcoholic beverages if the victim is conscious. Seek medical help immediately. o The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends, if you detect symptoms of frostbite, seek medical care. Because frostbite and hypothermia both result from exposure, first determine whether the victim also shows signs of hypothermia. Hypothermia is a more serious medical condition and requires emergency medical assistance. · Drive only if it is absolutely necessary. If you must drive: travel in the day; don’t travel alone; keep others informed of your schedule; stay on main roads and avoid back road shortcuts. · Let someone know your destination, your route, and when you expect to arrive. If your car gets stuck along the way, help can be sent along your predetermined route. · Once the storm has passed, if you are not already home, follow instructions from your local transportation department and emergency management agency to determine which route will be safest for you to get home. Drive with extra caution. Dress for the Weather · If you must go outside, wear several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing rather than one layer of heavy clothing. The outer garments should be tightly woven and water repellent. · Wear mittens, which are warmer than gloves. · Wear a hat. A hat will prevent loss of body heat. · Cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs. After Winter Storms and Extreme Cold · If your home loses power or heat for more than a few hours or if you do not have adequate supplies to stay warm in your home overnight, you may want to go to a designated public shelter if you can get there safely. Text SHELTER + your ZIP code to 65051 (4FEMA) to find the nearest shelter in your area (e.g., SHELTER65051) · Bring any personal items that you would need to spend the night (such as toiletries, medicines). Take precautions when traveling to the shelter. Dress warmly in layers, wear boots, mittens, and a hat. · Continue to protect yourself from frostbite and hypothermia by wearing warm, loose-fitting, lightweight clothing in several layers. Stay indoors, if possible. For additional severe weather safety information, visit the National Weather Service website (https://www.weather.gov/). Tips & Tricks – August 12, 2022

Driving and Parking on Campus

Good afternoon students! The first two weeks can be stressful for students driving and parking on campus. If you can, please review these tips to help create a smooth transition to the Fall schedule. We know there can be frustration about arriving and parking on campus, but please follow these simple tricks and we should be able to have a great first week on campus.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reply. Have a good weekend.

Driving & Arriving on Campus

We are just over 1 week until the start of classes! Here are a few reminders to make driving to campus a positive experience.

  • Arrive early – we recommend arriving on campus about 30 minutes prior to class. This will help with traffic flow through Linn and help you find a spot to park. After arriving early, you can walk to class and stop by Founder’s to grab a quick bite to eat.
  • If you see full parking lots, please continue on to the next open lot – spots fill up quickly near the main entrance. However, we have lots all over campus. Simply proceed to the right at the traffic circle on Technology Drive and look for the next open lot. We have lots all the way to the back of campus. Every lot is only about a 5-minute walk to the other side of campus. Help us keep traffic flowing smoothly by NOT circling lots to find a spot in a lot that is full.
  • Once you have found a spot on campus, stay parked during the day. Try to avoid driving off campus between classes. This will keep traffic congestion to a minimum and avoid time lost looking for a spot again when you return to campus.

It is important to know the campus speed limit is 15 miles per hour. Please follow this speed limit to keep everyone safe.

It is also important to follow traffic laws while driving through Linn, MO. Please obey speed limits through town and understand we have a convergence of three law enforcement entities close to campus.

  • Linn Police
  • Osage County Sheriff
  • Missouri State Patrol

Be safe and please follow traffic laws. Thanks.

Parking

When you arrive on campus, please park in spots that have white lines. If you have parked in a location and see one of the following below your vehicle…

  • Striped lines
  • No lines at all
  • Grass
  • Yellow lines

…you have parked illegally. We will write warning tickets during the first week and then issue parking citations. We do not want to write tickets, so please park inside the white lines.

Where are the open parking spaces?

Most mornings, there are open parking spots immediately to the east of the Vehicle and Power Canter.

Please continue to follow Technology Drive to the right of the traffic circle and follow it until you find an open parking space.

If you live on campus:

  • Please park in the lot closest to your cottage and walk to your class locations on campus. You will receive a parking sticker that needs to be displayed in your car when it is parked at your dorm. This helps with traffic congestion issues during the day.
  • After 5:00 PM, housing students can park in other areas of campus.

If you have questions about parking, I am more than happy to discuss you concerns. Please send me a note or stop by my office in Nilges 109. Please address our parking issues as soon as possible so we do not have to issue tickets. Thank you for helping us address this together. Have a great day!

Tips & Tricks - August 5, 2022

Food Allergy

If you have a food allergy and are nervous about purchasing a meal plan, please reach out to our Campus Dining expert, Erica Hartzell with Aladdin. They have a Dietician on staff and want to hear from students about how they can help students with food allergies/or dietary accommodations. Aladdin has a desire to safely accommodate students with meal options, but they need information from you.

Please complete the attached form and send it back to Erica at erica.hartzell@aladdinfood.com. Thanks.

Tips for Success

During Power Up, our faculty and staff will provide information about how to be successful at State Tech. As simple as it may seem, the two most important factors in getting off to a great start are to attend 100% of classes and turn in 100% of all assignments.

Recent data from our Early Alert process shows that about 80% of students who are reported for poor grades/performance do not have regular attendance or struggle to turn in assignments. Our team talks to students about the things they can control during their time as a student.

  • Attitude
  • Effort
  • Behavior
  • Actions

Attendance and completing and turning in assignments are definitely in those four categories. If your student is struggling with any course content, we recommend communicating with the instructor directly.

There are also other resources on campus. We have FREE tutoring in the Academic Resource Center (ARC) and our team in the Library can assist in researching resources that may help with studying for assignments.

Finally, we have our team in Counseling Services if students need to talk about anything regarding their classes or life situations taking place outside the classroom. We have a team of folks on campus that all want students to succeed. We ask students to attend class and turn in assignments, but can assist when they begin to have questions and need assistance.

Early Alert Process

What is the Early Alert process? Our faculty are able to notify our Counseling Services team when they see students are struggling with attendance, academic performance, or job readiness concerns. When a faculty member submits in Early Alert, a member of the Student Success team will attempt to follow up directly with the student through a variety of methods including text, e-mails, phone calls, and direct outreach. When our team reaches out, it is important for students to reply to those messages. The team will provide guidance for the student on how to get back on a path to success in the class.

State Tech is excited about our new partnership with Aladdin Campus Dining. Starting this Fall, we are opening with these new concepts at Founder’s 1961 Café.

Tips & Tricks - August 1, 2022 (Information for Students and Parents)

Students and parents! Here are some tips and tricks on how to get the most out of the first few weeks on campus at State Tech during the 2022-2023 instructional year.

First, our offices will be open Sunday, August 21, 2022 from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM. We will be available to accommodate any families using the weekend to move their students in Linn.

You can visit the Bookstore, stop by the Cashier’s office to pay a bill, or check on your registration and discuss your financial aid.

If you want to discuss tutoring or services with our Library or Counseling team, stop by and meet them.

Sunday, August 21, 2022 – Move-In Day

If you are moving into Housing on-campus or off-campus, our team will be available on Sunday, August 21, 2022.

We will have Residence Life staff in our on-campus area in the Commons from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

We will also have a State Tech representative helping students with Move-In at the hotel in Linn and at Tull Hall at Lincoln University.

We will have Cottage Meetings for those living on campus, in the hotel, and at Tull Hall starting at 5:00 PM.

Regardless of where you are living, we hope everyone joins us for a Dodgeball Tournament in the Activity Center from 7:00 PM – ???. Come and compete with the folks in your cottage, apartment, house, etc. and have a great time the night before Power Up.

Power Up is Monday. August 22, 2022

Power Up is Monday, August 22, 2022.

Week of Welcome Program Competition

In the Fall of 2021, we started a competition between all the programs. The program with the highest attendance percentage at Week of Welcome events would win $5,000 to go toward program improvements.

Auto Collision came out the winner and used the $5,000 to help purchase tools for their shop. Getting these tools into the hands of their students had a positive impact on teaching and learning.

Did Your Program Win the Week of Welcome Competition?

After the Week of Welcome $5,000 program check is awarded, we will clear the scoreboard and start a second YEAR LONG competition between the programs for a second $5,000 prize to be awarded at the End of the Year BBQ and Silent Auction.

We hope this second prize keeps programs energized on attending events on campus the entire 2022-2023 instructional year.

We have seen over the years, the students who remain engaged inside and outside the classroom have a higher completion rate and enjoy their State Tech experience.

Questions?

Just like any other Staying in Touch communication, I would like to know your questions. Regardless of the topic, if you need an answer, please share the question. I will work to answer or find a member of our team that can assist. Thanks and have a great week!

Tips & Tricks – August 1, 2022

Good morning State Tech faculty and staff!

As we prepare for the 2022-2023 instructional year, we wanted to keep you all informed about upcoming events that will kick-off the year. Please be on the lookout for information about required communication about Title IX and Campus Security Authority. We will have communications and instructions to complete the required training in Canvas coming soon.

Power Up – Monday, August 22, 2022

We are just 3 weeks away from Power up! We will invite our new students to campus for a welcome session and general information. The students will then be escorted to a location where they will meet their program instructors, advisors, participate in an icebreaker activity, and learn information about campus resources in our “Meet the Instructors” session. Following that session, we will walk the students back to the patio between the Activity Center and the OCCC for a FREE BBQ dinner and concert by local country band Shiloh.

All faculty and staff are invited to attend. We believe this is a great opportunity to connect with incoming students.
Power Up Agenda

On Monday, August 22, 2022, all campus offices will be open from 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM to serve students and parents with any last minute items they need to complete before our Power Up agenda begins.

Please see the schedule of events to become familiar with the timeline of the day.

Plan to attend the Welcome BBQ & Concert:  free dinner while enjoying live music of Shiloh prior to the first day of classes.

Week of Welcome

Here are the Week of Welcome activities scheduled for the Fall of 2022.

We hope you will encourage students to attend activities during the week in between and after classes.

These events allow students to socialize with others in their program outside the classroom and to meet students from other programs across campus.

Students will earn “State Tech Tokens” for every event attended. They will use them at the end of the year BBQ and Silent Auction to bid and purchase prizes. Last year, we had over 440 students attend the end of the year BBQ and prize event. We hope we can top that this year.

Week of Welcome – Program Competition

Why is it important to encourage students to attend Week of Welcome activities? We know that students who make meaningful connections outside the classroom find more reasons to persist to the next semester and ultimately retain to graduation.

We have also brought back a competition for the second year. The program with the highest attendance percentage during Week of Welcome activities wins a $5,000 prize from SGA.

Last year, Auto Collision won the inaugural award. Christian Record used the prize to assist with tool purchases for his shop that had an immediate impact on learning.

What program will be able to take the coveted prize in the Fall of 2022?

Overkill Grill – August 31, 2022

We will host major events each Wednesday after the Week of Welcome. The first will be the “Overkill Grill” BBQ on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM on the patio between the Activity Center and the OCCC.

State Tech purchased a steer at the Osage County Fair for this event.

All are welcome to attend and enjoy the FREE BBQ.

Year Long Program Competition

In an effort to keep students engaged all year long. We are creating a program competition that lasts the entire instructional year.

After the Week of Welcome $5,000 prize is awarded, we will wipe the scoreboard clean and start another program competition that will last the remainder of the instructional year.

The program with the highest attendance percentage at campus activities throughout the year will win a second $5,000 award from SGA.

We know you all do a great job of keeping students engaged inside the classroom. We hope this is an opportunity to keep your students engaged outside the classroom all year long. We are excited to try this for the first time during the 2022-2023 year!

Questions

Please let me know if you have any questions about planned activities and events for the year. We will have more communications about education and awareness events planned for students in the coming weeks. These events will build on our required trainings and introduce topics like healthy relationships and other life skills that will transition well into the world of work.
