Director of the Entertainment and Events Center

Background

State Tech is a nationally ranked two-year technical college.  We recruit students from all over the state of Missouri including St. Louis and Kansas City.  Linn, MO is a town of less than 1500 residents 15 miles from Jefferson City and an hour from Lake of the Ozarks. Two years ago the Osage Country Club was given to the college.  State Tech began to form a vision of what the club could be as a recruiting tool and asset to the community.   Two years later ground has been broken on a 31k SF event and entertainment center and 10k SF academic building and driving range.  The academic building will serve our turf and grounds academic program and is located adjacent to the golf course.

Vision for Facility

One of the first things a perspective student asks is “what is there to do in Linn”?  This facility will help us answer that question. Given the varied interest of our student populations we have designed something for everyone at the facility.  In the summer when students are at internship this will serve as an entertainment destination for local and Central Missouri residents.  Most weekends students travel home, this will serve local residents on weekends as well. The 300 seat event center will serve weddings, special events, and corporate events such as corporate retreats or teambuilding getaway’s.

Facility Attributes

1. Pool- Zero entry, two lap lanes, kids water features, a lazy river that looks over the course, ample deck space, and both a swim up and walk up bar.  The pool will be heated to extend the swim season to late March to late October.
2. Outdoor Entertainment- 9 hole golf, heated and covered TopRange 10 bay golf driving range, outdoor games to be determined, several fire pits, 18 hole disc golf course.
3. ProShop- A small pro shop will be located near the front of the building.  Leased carts will be located under a raised deck to the west of the building on hole 1.  It has yet to be determined if a full-time employee will run the shop or if part-time employees will be utilized.
4. E-Sports- An e-sports room will be located towards the front of the building.  How this functions has not been determined.  It may simply be available to State Tech students.
5. Theatre- A 50 seat theatre will have AMC style seating and the technology required to play first run movies. The space will have technology hookups to use the space as a lecture or presentation space.
6. Meeting Room- Building will have a conference room for private meetings for 12-16 people.
7. Event Center- Event Center will seat at least 300 with a wrap around deck that could increase the capacity.  The second floor event center looks over the golf course, Osage County, and a small lake.  Event center will have higher end finishes such as a fire place where the head table would be located, curtains to change the look of the head table, draped fabric seating, and full glass that looks out over the course.  Event Center will have a small prep kitchen, and a brides room.
8. Bowling- 4 lanes of duckpin bowling will provide a bit of unusual entertainment.
9. Sports Simulator- 3 Golf Simulators by Top Swing will provide a high end golf simulation experience.  These are able to play movies as well and have retractable curtains for private events.
10. Sports Bar and Restaurant- The lower level will have an open air feel complete with a sports bar and restaurant.  The extensive kitchen was designed to serve any variety of food.  We will not be serving pizza and wings as there are already two pizza restaurants in Linn.  The bar has the ability to serve the restaurant, golf course, pool, and pool deck from a single space.
11. Technology- A nearly $1 million AV package will allow for the control of the entire facility from a single i-pad.  A video wall in the sports bar and numerous TV’s create a sports bar feel.

Attributes of the Director

Start up and operating this facility is something outside of the expertise of any current State Tech employee.  State Tech understands how critical a positive opening is to the long-term success of this operation. Responsibility for the overall start-up of this facility will fall to the director.

State Tech is also a “all hands on deck” organization.  Saying “that is not my job” is not in our vocabulary all the way to the president of State Tech.  The director will be hands on when necessary.  While the start up will be part art and part science, long term the ability to make data driven decision will be required.

At State Tech we work hard and play hard.  The vibe for the facility will be fun and electric.  The director and employees will share in creating that feel. Employees should look forward to coming to work every day. The director should have the experience managing people to make that a reality.

Reporting Line

This facility has been a passion of the college president who has been very active in the design of this facility.  This position will report to the college president.

Salary and Start Date

Salary is negotiable but is expected to be $80,000 depending on qualifications.  The facility is expected to be complete May of 2023 and open shortly thereafter.  The start date can be negotiated but is expected to be July 1 or sooner.

Summary

Starting and operating a facility like this is a once in a career opportunity. This will be a unique facility not only for Central Missouri and Missouri but may also attract some national attention as a new model for a golf and entertainment destination.  The exact roles and responsibilities of the director will evolve as we determine usage and required staffing.  The selected director will have to be comfortable with some unknowns and evolving into the director role as the facility matures.
