State Technical College of Missouri is an Accredited Testing Facility for the American Welding Society (AWS) as of September 2013.
AWS approved welding certifications lets an employer know that you have completed a nationally recognized test, which shows your ability to perform a sound weld in accordance with industry standards. Each certified welder has a certification card that shows approved welds which must be renewed every 6 months, or they will expire.
State Technical College of Missouri offers Practical Welding Tests and Maintenance Renewal only at this facility, and testing is performed in 4 hour blocks, twice a day. When you first arrive at the facility you will be given instructions in safety and review the Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) specific to the test you are taking. You will be given the chance to familiarize yourself with the facilities’ equipment.
To become certified, you must show your welding skills during the test and produce a sound weld that passes visual inspection as well as Destructive/Non-Destructive testing. There will be no time for training during the testing process, if you feel that you do not possess the skill required before arriving at the testing facility please contact the Facility Rep., Frances Boswell. We have customized training classes available through the Business and Industry Relations office upon request. The CWI will not give welding lessons during the testing process.
There is no one universal test to certify welders, welders may have to be certified in each process used (SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, & FCAW, etc.) and for each group of metals (steel, stainless, aluminum, etc.). Some tests restrict the thickness of metals that can be welded, as well as the direction of travel. Tests can be done with or without backing, and with various joint designs. In addition, some tests cover all positions of welding while some restrict positions.
You may only be certified to do what you were tested for, so ask questions about what type that your job requires for you to obtain. Consult your company’s welding or quality control engineer or QA manager for the proper tests needed.
A list of current test prices are listed below; please note AWS has a $35 processing charge for each weld test certification document. The application cost is included in the total price listed below.
