Alumnus John Scheulen to deliver commencement address at State Tech

State Technical College of Missouri alumnus, John Scheulen, will give the commencement address at the graduation ceremonies Saturday, May 5.

Scheulen, a graduate of the Aviation Technology program, has been an employee with the college for nearly 40 years.  The majority of those years, Scheulen served as an aviation instructor for the college.

Prior to attending State Tech, Scheulen served in the military where he became interested in aviation.   After returning home to Rich Fountain, MO., he enrolled in classes in the college’s new aviation technology program.   In the early 70s, the program was housed in a Quonset hut behind the high school which was also used to show hogs during the Osage County Fair.

A quarter of the way into Scheulen’s first semester as a student, an aviation instructor became ill and unable to continue teaching at the college.  With his military background in aviation, Osage County RII Superintendent Thurman Willett approached Scheulen asking him to help out as a part-time instructor until a replacement could be found.  “I told him I would give it a try and help out,” said Scheulen.

According to Scheulen it was a very interesting situation.   “I’d be sitting in class with a group of students for four hours in the morning and by the afternoon I was teaching that same bunch of students.”

From that point on Scheulen remained an instructor with the college.  “Since I was attending class and teaching at the same time, it took me a little longer to get my degree,” he said.  “I finally graduated in 1976.”

On Saturday, Scheulen will address State Tech graduates at two ceremonies scheduled at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the STC Activity Center.  Graduates from the Civil Technology and Transportation Technology divisions will be honored at the 10:00 a.m. ceremony and graduates from the Arts and Science, Computer Technology and Industrial Technology divisions will be honored at the 1:30 p.m. ceremony.

With more than 35 academic programs, State Technical College of Missouri is Missouri’s only public two-year technical college with a statewide mission to prepare students for profitable employment and a life of learning.
