Blair Oaks students receive top honors in writing contest
Two dual-credit students at Blair Oaks High School and State Technical College of Missouri were recently recognized as top entries in the 2012 Missouri Region Scholastic Writing Awards Contest.
Of the 704 regional submissions, Kendal McEntire and Paul Lackman received Honorable Mention Awards for their entries.
“I am extremely proud of these two students,” said Kelli Jones, Communications Instructor. “This is a big honor for these students to get their work selected. They have represented Blair Oaks High School and State Technical College of Missouri in a very honorable manner.”
Founded in 1923 by Scholastic, Inc. founder, Maurice R. Robinson, The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards have encouraged over 13 million students, recognized more than 9 million young artists and writers, and made available more than $25 million in awards and scholarships.
Panels of professional jurors, comprised of authors and educators, review works of art and manuscripts to select award recipients.
On March 2, McEntire and Lackman were recognized at a winner’s ceremony and reception during the Language Arts Write to Learn Conference at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach. At the reception, the students received a certificate for their award, a copy of Scholastic’s Best Teen Writing 2011 and a signed copy of a work from one of the conference’s guest authors.
According to Jones, the students will also be listed as winners and have their entries published in Missouri Youth Write, an online publication available June 1, 2012.
With more than 35 academic programs, State Technical College of Missouri is Missouri’s only public two-year technical college with a statewide mission to prepare students for profitable employment and a life of learning.
