The students competed in the RCMC contest which required them to develop a set of construction drawings, a construction estimate, a work schedule and a sales presentation from conceptual drawings and then present their work to a panel of judges.
According to Aaron Kliethermes, Design Drafting Technology chair/instructor, the students received the conceptual drawings in October 2011, with a due date of January 2012. “This was a great real life experience for our students to compete in,” said Kliethermes. “The judges were really impressed with our team’s proposal and presentation. Our students had to research different green materials that could be used in the North Canton, Ohio area.”
“The students received the ‘Rookie of the Year’ award because of the time they put into this project,” said Kliethermes. “It was a great national recognition for the students and the college.”
The students on the team included: Simon Cort, Jefferson City, MO - Team Leader; Stacey Garren, Columbia, MO – Green Researcher; Brendan Stumpe, Meta, MO – Material Researcher; Jordan Kliethermes, Koelztown, MO – Material Researcher; and Donovan Gohn, Linn, MO – CAD Designer.
Through the HBA Student Chapter at State Tech, the students were able to acquire a $1000 travel scholarship from the National Association of Home Builders and $250 from the Central Missouri Home Builders Association to help pay for some of the travel expenses.
Kliethermes, who also serves as the HBA Student Chapter Advisor at State Tech, was nominated by a student to receive the Outstanding Junior Faculty Advisor award, which was presented at the International Builders Show.
Kliethermes received the award in recognition of his involvement at the college, his construction experience and his local HBA connections. “I feel this award is not only for me, but the college as well,” stated Kliethermes. “The college is very supportive of the faculty, staff and our students in outside extracurricular activities.”
With more than 35 academic programs, State Technical College of Missouri is Missouri’s only public two-year technical college with a statewide mission to prepare students for profitable employment and a life of learning.
