State Technical College of Missouri’s 2015 Reaccreditation and Visit

State Technical College of Missouri (STC) has much to be proud of in its service to students as well as business and industry.  As the only state technical college in Missouri, much is expected of us.  Earning and maintaining accreditation is vital to the college’s growth and success as well as the continued success of students and alumni.  Our regional accrediting body is the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (HLC).  As you may already know, our institution has been one of less than 10% of the HLC membership selected to help pioneer a new accreditation process that will change how colleges and universities nationwide are measured.  We have gone from being unaccredited to being stars in less than twenty years. We are strong believers that the HLC accreditation process is beneficial for STC.

The Higher Learning Commission’s Accreditation Team will visit our campus January 26-27, 2015.  In preparation for that visit, a team composed of administration, faculty and staff has started the process of reviewing how our college is meeting the HLC criteria. 

A major part of this process is examining how STC meets the following HLC criteria:

  • The mission is clear and guides the college’s operations.
  • The institution acts with integrity.
  • The college provides high quality education wherever and however its offerings are delivered.
  • The institution demonstrates responsibility for the quality of its educational programs, learning environments, and support services, and it evaluates their effectiveness for student learning through processes designed to promote continuous improvement.
  • The institution’s resources, structures, and processes are sufficient to fulfill its mission, improve the quality of its educational offerings, and respond to future challenges and opportunities.  The institution plans for the future.

Throughout this process, a committee made up of administration, faculty and staff will take on the following tasks:

  • Write an “Assurance Argument,” a 35,000-word electronic document that demonstrates how the college meets the five HLC criteria for accreditation and federal compliance.
  • Gather evidence to support this argument.

Preparing for the HLC campus visit is a high priority for our campus and therefore the committee will be seeking information throughout the process from various departments, programs and individuals. 
Drafts of this argument will be presented to faculty, staff, and students for review and input.  Communication about the HLC Assurance process will be delivered via email, presentations and other updates for faculty, staff, students and the advisory council.
